WOW! What a time it has been for me recently. Taking a jump into running this ministry/business (almost) full-time was kind of like jumping off a cliff edge and *hoping* there was a trampoline to catch me below that I couldn't see. Turns out the trampoline was indeed there! Here is a quick update of the things I have coming up this year as of now.
First: Art Markets
I am booked for three local art markets in August! I have always loved walking around art and farmers markets because the conversation, individuality, and creativity from all those vendors coming together creates an atmosphere that invigorates me. Conversation and getting to know people is one of my greatest joys in life. And markets provide the perfect environment for that! Market vendors are the most interesting people because they all have such unique stories about how they made it to where they are. Conversations with vendors always leave me inspired by how they take so much initiative to create a life for themselves that doesn't match the standard 9-5 grind lifestyle. My favorite question to ask a vendor is, "How did you get started with what you're doing?" Now I'm honored to be able to bring that inspiring experience to other people by chatting with them about my art!
You can visit me at the General's Market on Sundays August 14, 21, and 28 at the General Stanton Inn in Charlestown, RI. Charlestown is also a super cute beach town, which gives it even more of an appeal.
Second: New Faith Formation Series
My biggest goal for The Galilee Initiative has always been to provide art-based* faith formation. Since I was young, I felt called to put my art at the service of God, but didn't have a clear path for doing so. Creating art for sacred spaces (churches, schools, etc.) is one thing, but I find even more value in actually interacting with people who are navigating their friendship with Christ. So how do I do both? As of next spring, I will be leading a four week faith formation series called Salvation History and the Arts for the Diocese of Providence. It will include fellowship and the opportunity to grow in and learn more about the faith all while considering this through the lens of sacred art. Some of my favorite things are fellowship, the Bible, and art. So this really couldn't get any better. The official dates are TBD, so stay tuned for more details because I am PUMPED about this!
Third: Local Neighborhood Workshops
Starting in September, I will teach two art classes at our local neighborhood community center. One is a portrait painting class and the other is a sketchbook and drawing class. These won't be religious-focused classes, but they are opportunities for me to steward the gifts God gave me within the local community Frank and I are building our family in.
That's about it for now. Next week, I will post Part 2 on how to interpret the symbolism in my St. Augustine painting.
